student associates scheme
The Student Associates Scheme is for students interested in gaining classroom experience while pursuing their studies.
The Student Associates Scheme gives you the chance to:
* discover what teaching is really like
* work alongside experienced teachers, and
* develop new skills.
There is a tax-free bursary around £40 for every day spent in school or college during the scheme. The scheme is open to students registered on relevant HND, foundation degree, undergraduate degree and postgraduate programmes subject to certain conditions.

POST GRADUATE.
ive spent the last month or so looking into various options for teacher training study after the degree, which i want to do at secondary level. unfortunately the bursary for art & design has been lowered from £6000 to £4000, which means it's not as in demand, and in turn will most probably be more competitive.
the two options i have are a post graduate certificate in education (PGCE) or school centered initial teacher training (SCITT). the SCITT programme sounds more hands on and classroom based which i find appealing - however there are only 3 art & design SCITT courses in the country. the PGCE courses aren't as practically driven, but there are around 20 different institutions that offer then in art & design.
PRACTICALITY- living costs a determining factor. as there is no-where in leeds that offers pgce's in art & design i will have to move elsewhere next year. i've narrowed my options down to 2:
1. BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY.
- i could move back home and commute - boring but cheap.
- i was offered the chance to do my placement at my old school in rugby which i would definitely accept - depending on whether they allocate your placement or not at birmingham. aside to this is that it's a very good school, and unique in the fact that a) it has specialist status in teaching and learning, and b) an art foundation.
2. BRIGHTON UNIVERSITY.
- move down to brighton with housemates who are looking to start up a printing company.
- as nick's parents want to invest in a property down there, hopefully rent should be a little less than it is here.
POSTGRADUATE STUDY FAIR.

MENTORING LEEDS.
i applied to education leeds to get onto an undergraduate mentoring programme that they run called 'mentoring leeds'. its a scheme that targets students from disadvantaged backgrounds across leeds to ultimately try and encourage/motivate them to progress to higher education. i went to the selection and training afternoon afew weeks ago and have been fortunate enough to get a place. now im waiting to find out which school im in.
placement/experience.
my secondary art teachers allowed me back to spend a couple of weeks in their department at the start of term. with a foundation course now in place this year, ages ranged from 11 to 21 and this provided a variety of interaction across the year groups. it took me afew days to get into it but when the 2 weeks were up i'd planned and taught a lesson, and supervised across every year group. also i actually enjoyed it, which is obviously a bonus.

this term.
so as mentioned in the powerpoint i've taken the decision to pursue a career in teaching art & design, and will be focusing the professional project on this. i will use this blog to note down things im doing to develop my learning/understanding, and anything else that i feel is relevant.
by the end of term im hoping to have a book, around 30 pages long, that could be used as a mini portfolio at a pgce interview.
